I apologize in advance for the one curse word in this story but I am only reporting what I heard.
I shared this story recently with a dear friend who was worried about a loved one. It is a story of hope for all that we do not know, vistas untold. You just wait… and wait is what we do until we hear Him call us by name. Home.
My brother left us all too soon. 42 too soon in fact. He was a giant of a man who loved life. All of it. He loved his work, rolling boulders on his lap and “making love” to them with chisel and mallet. He took pride in being a successful businessman, his own boss. He loved his land, a nine acre farm with pigs and horses, chickens, dogs, cats and an old green barn. He loved his tractor, his guitar and the band he played in and on top of all that he got married and had three precious children whom he adored. In the end he said, I felt like I had it all. I had everything I ever wanted in my life. It was a good life, a hard earned life. He really didn’t want for anything more. Why would he want to leave all that? We sure didn’t want him to leave us but he showed us how to do it. He was so brave as he left his big family and many friends to greatly mourn his passing.
Years after Eric died we were traveling to a wedding of a very dear friend in California. My husband Pat and I had never really traveled very far and had not been away in years so it was a big deal. On the drive from the airport we stopped at our first vista lookout, mountains and valleys, the colors of vegetation and trees, the blue sky, it was all just spectacular! I literally felt like I couldn’t take it all in. It was so beautiful.
Pat pulled into a park space and had barely stopped before I barreled out of the car to get a better view. What a miracle laid before me! I just wanted to thank God. So, I threw my arms wide open and looked up at the big sky and out over the valley and yelled, O MY GOD! YOU CREATED ALL THIS! Before I could finish with THANK YOU!! Eric’s voice unmistakenly butt in and said, “Aw Lis, this ain’t shit…..you just wait!”
He had not been on my mind. He just knew it was the right time to speak to me. I ran to tell Pat crying. It was a beautiful moment. You just wait…..
