My daughter, Roslyn, is a very friendly and social little girl. She just started Kindergarten this year and she is making new friends. There is a little girl in her class who has never spoken to anyone including the teacher. I encouraged Roslyn to try to make friends with her, even if she doesn't talk there are other ways to communicate. She started playing with this little girl and they became best friends without needing to communicate verbally. Roslyn runs around with her and includes her when she is playing and by the little girl's smile she knows she is having fun! One day the little girl brought Roslyn a butterfly necklace that has a little "BFF" charm (which means Best Friends Forever). Roslyn loves butterflies and felt so special that the little girl gave her this necklace and wears one just like it. One weekend Roslyn asked to have the little girl sleepover (it was both of their very first sleepovers). The little girl's mom was a little nervous because there would be a communication barrier and she wasn't sure how it would work out. Roslyn ended up bringing the little girl out of her shell and by the end of the night she was talking to everyone in the house! Roslyn felt so special that the little girl shared her voice with her and felt comfortable enough to speak to her. The next day Roslyn and the little girl went back to school and they decided that from now on they would find a quiet place during recess and talk. The little girl was brave enough to then say hi to another little girl in their class. Friendship and support can help others find the strength they need to be brave enough to take even the smallest positive steps. One small act of kindness could mean the world to someone!
